Kingston University-London visit to Onverwacht

For the second year running we have had the pleasure of taking our Geography, Environment and Sustainable Development students on fieldwork from Kingston University in London to South Africa and to stay at the Onverwacht farm. Onverwacht is the perfect place for our fieldtrip! The location is truly inspirational, set high up in the Riversonderend Mountains above McGregor in the Robertson Karoo.  It's the most incredible outdoor laboratory to observe and study nature - an environmental classroom at your doorstep.  Allowing exploration of the Cape sandstone rocks, mountain fynbos, rugged landscape and a variety of fauna and flora awaiting discovery. The Onverwacht farm is the gateway to the Boesmanskloof Hiking Trail, a 14km path that snakes through this landscape and provides a glimpse of this fascinating world and a true highlight of the fieldtrip.

However, the biggest appeal of Onverwacht, contributing to such an amazing experience, are the owners, Japie and Sandra  Oosthuizen.  Their hospitality and terrific staff always make us feel so welcome and help create such a magical atmosphere.  It's a visit which stays with all of us for a lifetime and it's no coincidence that for two years running our stay has been the students (and staffs) highlight of the fieldtrip in South Africa. Thank you Sandra and Japie for everything; we cannot wait for our next trip out to see you and, of course, we are all missing Onverwacht already!
